Mt. Tam (Double) Summit Mountain Bike Trail via Hoo-Koo-E-Koo - Mill Valley, CA
(This epic mountain bike ride gets you to the top of Mt. Tam via the famous Old Railroad Grade bike trail and Hoo-Koo-E-Koo bike trails, past the West Point Inn, and includes a fun descent down upper Eldridge Grade)
Directions: 101 to Blithedale Road Exit; head West on Blithesdale until you hit the end of West Blithedale (or park closer to town and ride up to the trailhead. Meet at Pete's, 88 Throckmorton Ave, MV, and ride 1 mile to trail.
Ride: From W. Blithedale trailhead (200') head up Old Railroad Grade just over .5 miles and hang a hard left (440') where you'll continue climbing on Old Railroad Grade until you hit Summit Road (800'). Climb Summit for about .5 miles and you'll dead-end into Old Railroad Grade (1000'). After .5 miles of climbing bear right through the "Double BowKnot" switchback trails until you hit the intersection with Hoo-Koo-E-Koo (1200') where you'll bear left and continue on Old Railroad Grade for over a mile until you pass the famous West Point Inn (1780'). Bear right and continue up Old Railroad Grade for another mile or so and you'll hit Ridgecrest Blvd (a paved road that takes you up to the top of East Peak). From here you can cross the road and continue up the trail to summit Middle Peak (2580') or you can turn right on the road and take the road up to the East Peak or bear right onto a paved trail that takes you up to the East Peak (both lead to the same parking area and a concession stand that seems to be open on nice days). (2340'). If you want to summit, hope off you bike and hike up to the top at Gardner Lookout (2572'). Even if you don't the views of San Francisco, the Pacific, and what looks like a lagoon formed by Tiburon, Belvedere and Angel Island are magnificant. From the East Peak parking lot head down the road (or the paved trail parallel to the road) and hang you first right onto a trail call Eldridge Grade. The first few hundred few are fairly steep and rocky, and the next mile is some fairly technical fireroad smattered with "death cookies" in places. Continue down Eldridge Grade for 2.5 miles or so until you hit Indian Fire Road (1450'). Bear right on Indian Fire Road, which is twisty fun fire road, and then bear a hard right onto Blithedale Ridge (1100'). Almost immediately bear right again onto Hoo-Koo-E-Koo (or do option 2) and ride it for over a mile until you hit the intersection with Old Railroad Grade, where you'll take a left, right and continue down until you hit Summit Road and then pick up Old Railroad Grade again back to West Blithedale Road.
Option 2 - Instead of taking Hoo-Koo-E-Koo, continue on Blithedale Ridge, which offers incredibly views, for about .3 miles and hang a right onto Old Railrod Grade, Bear left at the fork and you'll be back at W. Blithedale.
